Beach
Club - September 2006
Update:
Saturday,
30 September, 2006: - not much 'else' to report - but
if you are interested (and you may or may not be) in our
'epic-road-trip' to the 'Northwestern-Georgian Hang-Gliding Mecca (at
Lookout Mountain Flight Park) then 'click-here'
for a separate web-page about same?
Update: 21-23 September, 2006:
- we visited, (yet again) at Quest Air in Groveland, Florida, and, yet
again, based on our review of several weather-web-site(s) picked some
pretty good days for hang-gliding and had some really good rides,
learned a lot from a friend (who is now off to Argentina for 5 months),
and generally had a pretty good time (as is usual) except for the
mosquitoes! IF you are at all interested - here's the 'track-log'
for a couple of flights...
Update:
Friday, 08 September, 2006: - Ms. May had a birthday today, we
went hiking and yesterday collected a new friend - all images here, but
not necessarily in the order noted - we'll leave it up to you to decide
which image goes with what text - a test of your deductive reasoning
skills...
Update:
Wednesday, 06 September, 2006:
We went exploring, hiking, hunting, etc. today - all on the
'north-shore' - our original intended destination was 'Lynn Valley' and
we spent some time, there, and hiked-around the canyon and the ravine
and saw 'Twin Falls' (pictures below)... -
AND: here's a picture in the Lynn Cafe - not a bad little snack-spot -
interesting architecture...
We also found (to my sister's great glee) that for the next two days
(September 7 & 8, 2006) some film-production-company (ostensibly a
Vancouver company) will be filming an episode of "Stargate SG-1" - for
their 10th season.
We also went to 'Deep Cove' where there is both a yacht-club and a
kayak rental establishment - both of which we viewed at great
length. Then we had lunch - (a very very tasty Greek-Tuna-Wrap
that was big enough for both of us!) Deep Cove - as a tiny - little -
community has a pretty nice web-site http://www.deepcovebc.com
.
You can find links to their kayak rental and yacht-club as well as
tasty restaurants, there.
We also visited "Cates Park" which seems to have two different 'parts'
but both are on the 'inlet' (Burrard Inlet). Strangely enough I
can't find this park in / with any sort of 'search engine' - not even
one dedicated to parks and recreation within the Vancouver area. -
you'll just have to trust me on this - very nice area - great parking,
bathrooms, grassy area(s) etc. etc. etc. - pretty nice area and they
don't advertise it at all... However, not to be 'out-done'
by the lack of search-engine excellence - here's a 'link' to a little
picture / graphic that I put together using Google Earth as a
background, - as is true for most "Mr. Bill Stuff" - it ain't pretty
but it gets the job done! Link
to Mr. Bill's image
And we, then wandered around "Barnet Marine Park" nearer May's Mom
& Dad's house - and it is on the site of an old wood-mill
built in the late 1800's then, eventually burned and abandoned in about
1940... if you want to see this on the web; go to: http://www.burnaby.worldweb.com/SightsAttractions/ParksGardens/
then type in ' Barnet Marine
Park '...
Update:
Sunday,
03 September, 2006:
our 'project' here at May's parent's house continues - here's an
'action' picture of May, her Dad, and Alex, - May's brother-in-law, and
I guess my 'brother-in-law' too but - the details of this
family-relation-stuff sometimes are (way) beyond me...
here's a 'status-update' picture; we've almost used-up all our
paving-stones - so have to run and get some more, today..
(Sunday)...
Anyway - Alex, who's a great guy, is married to May's sister, Ms. Yee,
and together they begat Mr. Jacob (who's picture is below)... Jacob is
also a 'great guy' though it's a little early to really tell.
However, we have taught him one extremely important phrase during our
visit: "Apple Good - PC Bad" - which he says
with great glee!
Local Governmental Project Inspector comes to visit, though!
here's a picture of the evidence left by the Port Moody inspector who
came last night to make sure the quality of our project was 'on-track'
for a quick and successful finish as well as longevity of project
results... the same inspector (we think) came through a
couple of days ago, and walked along the fence-top while we were in the
yard - maybe we'll get a bigger picture of him, soon...!!!
Update:
Friday, 01 September 2006:
Well - September 'dawns' on us as
we are enjoying cool weather, sunshine (mostly) and May's parents &
family here in Vancouver, BC, CANADA...
Ms. May's here visiting relatives and helping-out to care for Mr.
Jacob, May's nephew:
We'll be home to Stuart SOON, though to visit with our cat, Ms.
Siew Mei, the lovely, talented, talkative and 'holding-down-the-fort /
scaring off hurricane Ernesto... In the meantime, here in
Vancouver Ms. Wong continues to enjoy her
'vacation' helping-out with her nephew Mr. Jacob.
Mr. Bill labors on labor-day-weekend as an LHD specialist (Load
Haul Dump ( (and
more) this task is supposed to be done with an internal combustion
engine and some hydraulics)) but we seem to be doing it via manual
labour... anyway - something to keep me busy and out of trouble...
Hurricane 'Ernesto' attempted a visit to Stuart, but Ms. Siew Mei kept
him at bay - and there were a LOT of people who helped-out when he was
'near and threatening! - Ms. Toby took care to feed and water Ms. Siew
Mei every day, Mr. John helped with hurricane shutters and FedEx
packages and Ms. Kara lent a hand with some 'human companionship' for
Ms. Siew Mei in the afternoons... - All in all it was scary
to be so far away from our house and our cat, not something I want to
do again - but each hurricane that comes by we learn something from -
I'd 'mostly' prepared the house before I'd left...
BUT - all seems well, now that Ernesto is gone to places north (though
we have a friend who sold a horse to someone in Maryland - thinking
that the horse would be safe(r) from hurricanes up there and
also, earlier in the summer we sold a couple of boats to somone
who sails on the Chesapeake Bay... -
And we have other news (gnus) from here, there, and everywhere...
Apple now says that it wants to replace BOTH of Mr. Bill's PowerBook G4
batteries - earlier it said it did not want to replace them - ugh ugh,
it also says don't use them until the new ones arrive (in 4 to 8
weeks?), if you use them they might catch fire? - not a pleasant
thought... though it is more pleasant to think about 2 batteries less
weight in my laptop bag as I trudge through the airport(s)...
AND _ we saw (on Sunday, 27th August at an RC park near Ms. May's
parent's house) a gentleman named "Alvin"
who does the most AMAZING things with a radio-controlled helicopter...
So we bought the RC simulation
software and it is not nearly as easy as it looks... The shop that
Alvin represents "Jet Hobbies"
is about an hour drive from May's parent's house - but we went to
visit them on Tuesday, since it was raining and there wasn't much
else to do. - Mr. Bill can now 'hover' (so to speak) around the
'field' in the simulation software - for 'about 1-2 minutes before he
crashes and 'sometimes' land again, but sometimes not?
Ms. May is 'getting there' - here's a picture of her 'simulating'
(actually - here's a picture of her just after a recent 'crash' - saves
a LOT of money by not having to buy new RC model components...
AND: I'm learning more and more ARRL
(amateur radio) and other such things - a LoT of 'on-line-studying'
going on, here (mostly for 'Emergency Communications' - something that
just might come in handy in south Florida...) , I've passed one test
with an 88% and am signed up for a couple of more study-terms /
tests...
We'll get to see some Seattleans we know fairly well - some relatives,
some from Hong Kong, Ms. May's going to attend a pottery workshop there
- and then we'll be home to see our beloved cat...
More later - as the week and the month develop...
