O.K., O.K., O.K., now it's 'later'
in the month and life has returned to somewhat normal activities and
such - so here we are with some things to see / read-about / view / be
concerned about:
1.)
The TriceQ seems to be making-up for 'lost-time' -with almost 200 miles
this week - we're riding more and enjoying it more, though today's ride
took me north of "Cove Road" - and it was SLOW SLOW SLOW with all the
traffic, people with dogs on the side-walk, and intersections and
what-not. - even though I rode almost 60 miles - it took me almost an
hour longer than the 67 miles I rode on Monday (Monday's
'average' was almost 12 mph; today's was barely 10.5 mph) - and after
4-6 hours that little bit of difference really starts to make a BIG
DIFFERENCE in the total miles travelled...
- ugh ugh ugh
-
NEXT time I do a "LONG RIDE" it's going to be at Lake Okeechobee where
I can really get some riding done - rather than all these
'interruptions'...
Monday's (18 January, 2010 = 67 miles) ride Wednesday's (20 January, 2010 = 58 miles) ride
Someone asked for a 'current' picture - not sure how they tell about current versus old, but here it is...
AND
- Ms._May is getting closer to wanting / buying a small-frame trike -
we'll see how that goes. We have several in mind, and the key is
probably to find a dealer (or dealers) who have 'in-stock' the ones she
would like to ride - try-out...
2.) yard-work - continues -
did 15 trash-cans yesterday - about 4 hours of yard-raking (amongst
other things) but - well - they emptied them all this morning - so now
I have to work my upper-body, MORE, and fill them up again!
3.) Ms. May's working (still / further / more) on her 'Empty Bowls' project - blog-here.
4.)
WEATHER: it was VERY CHILLY for a couple of weeks - and froze a few
nights - then got warmer last Friday - and I went kiteboarding but the
WATER was COLD... Went sailboat racing on Saturday (moderate
temperature and a LOT of wind (for sailing (15-22 mph S / SSE)))
- with some people from Tampa - ended up in second place for the day,
not bad!
5.) Now studying for the "GROL
(Wikipedia-Link)" test (General Radiotelephone Operator License) -
Another FCC license that is a bit more 'involved' than the Amateur
Radio license(s) that I already have. More electrical
theory (and some laws and regulations) more electronics, more digital,
some radar, and so-forth. This license will allow me to (legally)
work on Marine and Aviation radios and fix them / trade-parts, and
so-on and so-forth... I'm also going to work on the GMDSS license
as soon as the book arrives - it's bought and paid-for but has been
back-ordered. GMDSS Wikipedia Link here.
6.)
Challenged by, now-a-days several attempts at electronics / de-bugging
/ corrosion prevention and recovery. - Hence the study for the two
above licenses - though I suspect here in South Florida that 99% of
problems are probably corrosion related and if one could solve /
re-solve that particular issue, one could really generate some
income... - Have found something called "X-Sealant-Gel"
- which I HOPE will help me / others in another 12-30 months or so but
only the passage of time will tell... This is a pretty amazing
gooey-stuff - if you want the ...pdf on it's uses, specs, etc. - here it is.
It's SNOWING in Stuart
(Saturday evening, 09 January 2010) and I did NOT repeat NOT go
200km on my recumbent tricycle today (in 43F and rain and wind!) -
- it's NOT a lot of SNOW - - it WILL NOT "Accumulate" on the
ground - it WILL NOT STAY around - but it IS SNOWING (a tiny tiny bit)
- I noticed it when I went out to drag hoses around and
turn-the-water-on (itsy bitsy) so it won't freeze pipes, pumps and
water-softeners...
It's EARLY in JANUARY of the NEW YEAR,
- and we wish everyone out there a
Happy New Year
- hoping for the best in the New Year
These are a few pictures
from when we spent the last few days of December 2009 in Miami, helping
to run a VERY LARGE sailing regatta - The "Orange Bowl Youth (Junior
Olympics)"...
While we were in Miami - and amongst the sailing and judging and other
such things that we do while there, we managed to spend a couple of
mornings riding our bicycles (and yes - Mr._Bill really does have a
bicycle (with only TWO WHEELS?)). The picture(s) above are
testament to his skill-set with only two wheels (no - he didn't fall
down) as well as his and his huggly-bunch's skill-set with the iPhone's
camera.
Since the iPhone is about the only thing small enough to carry-with-one
on a bicycle - it's pretty handy, and with a little patience in
cropping / moving around (grovelling around on the ground to get the
framing and the white-balance correct) the iPhone's camera takes a
pretty darned good picture...
We did manage to meet some new judges and some new
'other-sailing-management-people'. One of the judges we met will
come and stay with us for a while later this month while she races in a
local regatta. That will be enjoyable and interesting.
Ms._May continues her US Sailing judging. She writes a blog about her experiences engaged in this activity.
Then in about a week Mr._Bill will, supposedly (weather (and other such
things) permitting) kick-off his 'century' tricycle ride. A Century is
100 miles - and he's going to try to do this one around the bulk of
Lake Okeechobee. We'll let you know how it all works out.
Ms._May will also be participating in some ceramic-arts engagements.
and then in February we'll travel to help-out and yet another regatta.
These are 'hold-overs' from previous months...
From September-October - the "CNC09 Cycling trip: Our arrival back home in
Stuart (on Monday, 5 October) (after a 13 1/2 hour - 760 mile drive, yesterday, in the RAIN
RAIN RAIN RAIN... from the "Cycle North Carolina - 2009" - 430 mile cycling
trip from Blowing Rock to Surf City - entirely in North Carolina...
The "
CNC09" - since it spanned September and October - has it's own web-page - so you can see that '
Here ' - It'll be 'new and different today (6 October) but I'll probably update it throughout the month as more things show-up...
On the hang-gliding front we have not been flying "that much" - but a
good friend of ours from _Colorado_ went to a competition in _Arizona_,
recently, and posted
this video.
It's only about 2 minutes / 10 seconds long but shows the
tow-up, the circular motion that is so important, some gliders below
him, and if you turn the sound up you can hear his 'vario' (the
instrument that tells a glider pilot he is in a rising column of air) -
typically called a 'thermal'.
Mr._Bill's best hang-gliding-flight (Ever) - see the FlightLog.Org web-page, here...
