Other things happening recently...
1.) Ms. Huggly came home - she'd been away for a while, it's certainly nice to have the wifely-one home again!
2.) We're packing for our CNC_2010 ride,
packing things like tent, inflatable mattress, bedding, clothing, etc.
etc. etc. all in Ziplocs and other such 'water-proof' baggggggggs (in
case it RAINs (which it most likely will!).
IF you are
interested, I can send you ...kmz files for you to put in / on
your Google Earth software so you can see the route we will ride (or
maybe I should say the route we HOPE to ride)
3.) We're enduring the RAIN and the MOSQUITOS, but the roses are THRIVING in all this heat and rain...
and have found that almost nothing keeps the mosquitos away - and as
much as we might like to think we are 'immune' that's not true at
all!!!!
Small self-portrait of the 'service technician'; and a picture of the "debris-field" created when I 'work'.
4.) Mr._Bill has been doing more 'camera-work' - here's a recent picture of one of the inlets nearby where we have a camera and weather system.
In
this inlet, recently (in the last couple of weeks) an experienced
(local) fishing guide / boat-captain managed, somehow, to let his
boat get side-ways to the huge waves on that day and he was
thrown-overboard, broke his neck and ultimately died from injuries.
Luckily the 'mate' on the boat saved the boat and the four
fishing-charter-people on board.
Details of the incident vary,
depending on who you talk to, but the bottom-line is: The sea can, at
times, be treacherous even for experienced people.
This
is also a very very popular spot for kiteboarding people, though
Mr._Bill has never been kiteboarding down here he does ride his trike
down here a lot.
5.) We're having fun petting Ms. Siew Mei:
When Ms._May came home, the 'petting-hugging' was transferred from the
cat to the wife. So now the cat does not feel overly loved, - so
she now needs extra 'attention'...
6.) Mr._Bill has finally (FINALLY)
managed to get back into his _Facebook_ account - which he'd been
locked-out-of for about a week. Apparently someone out there (in
California) finally responsed to the between 10 and 20 e-mails
(some with screen-shots) and 4 or 5 voice-mails - and FINALLY did
something to help out.
Now _Facebook_ users have a choice as to
how to 'verify account'. Before this little 'incident' there was
no choice. As a friend (well maybe) puts it - maybe it's my funky
iPhone that's the problem, not really _Facebook_ (but the iPhone gets
SMSs from a lot of different places, just not from _Facebook_).
7.) Triking-continues
- both to keep in shape and to ready ourselves for the CNC ride... -
see below for the latest practice session (Sebring) for Mr._Bill.
"Personal Firsts": - I managed a couple of 'firsts' recently:
- Rode from Hobe Sound to Jupiter along the bicycle-lane on US-1 on Sunday, 12th (before 08:00 a.m.)
- virtually no traffic on US-1 - about 2 cars a minute and it's only
about 7 miles - meaning a bit shorter than the Jupiter Island route -
and much faster, too! - This is something I'd been wanting
to do for a long time - and so I finally did it...
- Managed a hair over 70 miles during a 'training-ride' - on the same Sunday - 12th)
Recent training mileage, just in case you're NOT interested:
- July mileage: 437
- August mileage: 550
- September mileage: 543 (to date (includes about 186 miles over the Labour Day Holiday weekend))
Bike_Sebring - sometimes called Tour_of_Sebring - over the US-Labour-Day-Holiday-weekend (3-6 September, 2010)...
Here's Mr._Bill (registration number 44 for this ride), in a picture taken by Jim Harris of "
Bike Tour Photo"
- the same guy who was at the Cycle North Carolina ride last year
(2009) and will also be at the Cycle North Carolina ride we'll be at
this year...
Here's
a 'map' (click for larger) of the route-up from Stuart (red-line) - the
Saturday ride - 64.4 miles (green line) the Sunday ride 63.8
miles(white line) and the Monday ride - 56.9 miles (blue-line)...
The map is 'centered' around Lake Jackson - which has the word
"Sebring" in it. The Kenilworth Lodge is on the SE shore of Lake
Jackson.
another picture...
The event was centered around and hosted at the "Kenilworth Lodge" (
web-site-here) and we rode each morning (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) right from the parking-lot in front of the hotel...
However the 'Lodge' is only a hotel - the actual riding-event was put-on by the
local cycling club
( the "Highlands Pedallers" (Highlands is the name of the county
that Sebring is located in)) and they are pretty well organized.
It
rained a 'bit' today (Monday) but, of course, the organizers do not
control the weather (much as we all would like for them to!)...
The other two days of riding were quite good - though hot - the
courses were pretty decent, the mild 'hills' a good training set-up for
North Carolina (later this month) and the rest-stops very well
stocked with sports-drinks, snacks and water...
I had a
respected & valued member of our family
with me to help me out as 'Pitt Crew' for the cycling portion as well
as 'Navigator' for the drive up and the drive back to Stuart....
Other
pictures from other sources will come in later - there were at least
three other people ( Besides Jim Harris of "Bike Tour Photo" ) who took
pictures...
