Bill Schell's "BeachWeb" for August  2013       made-with-Nvu-t.png

Today is Wednesday, the14th of August... - I do (sometimes) a 'lot' of fixing-things-on-the-beach.

I had a friend with me, today, who took some good pictures, here is just one of the pictures, with a little 'blow-up' of an important part... ......

Today is Tuesday, the 13th of August, not a bad-day, did some cycling, today, some driving, and in general it was a pretty good day... ... ... (at least I didn't have to figure out how to push a watermelon up-hill through the water, huh?!)

Ms. May found this and we thought it was pretty special...!!!

We're also working on putting up a new roof / shade-area over the new entrance to the pottery-studio.  I managed to (like other small projects like this) dig some holes for some 4" x 4" posts and dig INTO places I shouldn't have (not the first time, guarantee it won't be the last time... ... ... (in this case the septic tank was in the way, as was the gutter-drain-pipe).

I couldn't move the septic tank (well I COULD but it would have taken a lot of time, sweat, and money) ... - BUT I DID MOVE the gutter-drain-pipe  (and actually replaced the pipe (I think $13 for 20 feet)) because I'd poked and shovel-cut a number of holes in the existing pipe...  (see picture, below!)

So  - after I moved the pipe (dug a new ditch) bought new pipe, bought a new elbow (and other assorted things) and re-routed the pipe, laid it in the ditch, covered it all up - then I proceeded to drive another damned stake right through the darned thing (YES, AGAIN!) - I have NOT, YET, fixed this latest mistake... - but - I will have to eventually..

LESSON TO LEARN / TEACH ONESELF: these black pipes are about as tender as tissue paper - don't get ANYWHERE CLOSE with a shovel, stake, or pin, and be CAREFUL where you route them and KNOW the route!....

some local friends who come by, frequently, to make sure we're doing things (whatever things we're doing) CORRECTLY... - and when they find an inspection is needed they ALWAYS get a snack, first!>

It's August in South Florida, and that means (just in case you didn't KNOW?) that means "HEAT"! (and some rain to go with it (things were GROWING in the yard, though mostly sand-spurs...!)

Many of you know that we went on another 'epic' journey... - a LOT of driving - like six weeks worth, like just a hair less than 10,000 miles worth, like about 600 miles of cycling (or so) - on 23 different days, like some visiting with family and friends, and a lot of sightseeing and much 'ooohing and aaahing' over this country's vast width, depth, and amazing road system(s) and visual impacts,
Bill_DevilsDen.jpg
some diving (snorkelling) in an underground cave-spring (near Ocala, Florida), on the way home from our lengthy journey...

We had some work to do on an out-of-the-way beach-cam - it took three of us to complete the work, though...
EVS_HSNWR_rebuild1.sm.jpg
During the ending days of July my 'beach-cam-maintenance' work has been very very busy... - Mostly - I'm guessing because of the 'heat' and 'humidity' and and much other replacment work going on before the first BIG hurricane of the season hits... - Several have 'dissipated' before they got to Florida, but we can't be expected to have that happen 'forever' - eventually we'll get HIT with a big-one and the work we are doing now for the 'beach-cams' will (I HOPE) prove to be 'well-placed' and - we hope - save us from some much 'FIX-IT-NOW' work AFTER the hurricane(s)....
MOI.sm.jpg
This is a 'screen-capture' (Apple's "Grab" software) ... tiff of a MoI screen - the graphic(s) therein are just me 'toying' with the new tool, but it's QUITE good!
AND AND AND - there's SOME degree of 'you CAN teach an 'Old Dawg' (with very little hair left) some "New Tricks" - in this case a 'new' CAD software tool called "MoI" (Moment of Inspiration)...

  1. faster horses

  2. younger women

  3. older whiskey

  4. more money

AND AND AND we had some friend(s) come by to help me 'design, re-design, and re-design again' the roof over the studio door.... One of the visitors contributed more than the others, though!

pano_Berkeleypit.jpg

This is a 'panorama' shot taken of the 'Berkeley Pit' (no, it's not a cherry-seed from near San Francisco).    This is (well was, until it's closing in the early 80s (after nearly 30 years of operation (yeah, how about getting to the POINT!!!))) - it WAS the largest open-pit copper-mine in the USA.  Some would say the world, but other countries might get upset...

- anyway - think about these 'facts'...
- 1.) the area of the top of the pit was larger than the town
2.) if over it's life time they removed about 10 billion TONS of rock - where did all that rock GO? - and
3.) NOW it has a LOT of Water in it.. (you can see that in the above image), what are they (whoever "THEY" is?) going to do with ALL THAT WATER?!!?!? (which is something like a ph of 2.5 right now (and yes - things DO LIVE IN IT!?!?!!).

However, it is becoming / has become / will continue to become a 'problem' for a number of organizations... - the SuperFund people, the Arco people, the Anaconda people, the People who live around it (and use the groundwater), and others that live 'down-stream' of the river which it is polluting.

- Another case where when mankind 'did' something (mine and treat copper) they didn't know enough about the 'aftereffects' so that future generations (and even more 'future' generations) will now have to 'clean-up-their-mess'  UGH UGH UGH ...

- more facts and figures at:  this Wikipedia link  - there are a bunch of other sites that also have information, you can search the Internet.
